ABOUT US
The local you didn’t plan on – but now can’t quite replace
You’ll probably just pop in for one.
People say that a lot.
Sometimes it’s after work drinks.
Sometimes it’s a casual dinner, long lunch, or a quick catch-up before something else.
Sometimes it’s the whole plan.
And then, at some point, it becomes the place you suggest without thinking.
Why people end up here
It’s easy to land here.
Right on the edge of the CBD, a short walk from the Ballarat train station – The North Star is the kind of place that fits in before something else, after something else, or instead of both.
You don’t need a plan.
You don’t need a reason.
You just find yourself here.
There’s usually a mix of people.
A table that’s been here a while.
Someone just stopping in.
A family settling in for dinner.
A few people mid-conversation about something that started somewhere else.
It’s not one kind of crowd.
And that’s kind of the point.
What you’ll find
Food that’s easy to agree on.
Drinks you already know your way around – and a few worth asking about.
A bartender who’s just as comfortable pouring a cold beer as they are talking you through something a little different.
Spaces that work whether you’re settling in, passing through, or somewhere in between.
Live music that gives the place a bit of movement – not every night, but often enough to matter.
Where it sits
The North Star has been here in one form or another since the 1850s.
Different names. Different versions.
Same idea.
A place people end up.
A place people return to.
A place where someone always seems to know what’s going on.
Ballarat’s changed. The building’s changed.
That part hasn’t.
You come once because it’s easy.
You come back because it’s good.
After a while, you realise you know a few faces. The bartender knows your drink.
